 What technologies are used?

There are a number of systems that can be used to deliver a content managed web site.

Server stuff
Here we use a server based computer language called PHP ( www.php.net ) to control site content stored in MySQL ( www.mysql.com ) databases.

The combination of PHP and MySQL is used all over the web these days providing an 'industrial strength' basis for building complex applications.

What kind of things can be built using this combination? Well, this site for starters.

We have built content managed shopping carts, client transaction record systems, inventory management systems, on line calendars, image processing programs, mailing lists, e-mail generating programs - in fact, it is just about the case that if you can imagine it (and it is feasible to build it for the web) the combination of PHP and MySQL can deliver it.

All our PHP is written by hand (no automated proprietary programs are used) and this means that we understand the code we write intimately. In turn, this means that we can customise anything to suit your requirements and we can support our programming totally. We don't have to ask anyone else - we do it all ourselves.

Other stuff
We also program the web browser to do stuff too, and this forms a component part of the whole as seen by the site visitor. We use Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to control the look of the page without cluttering up the layout with loads of unnecessary tags, and we understand and hand code Javascript to provide sophisticated control over things like submission form fields, verification and cool effects. Actually we don't recommend too many cool effects, because these can annoy site visitors and slow down the speed at which pages load. We prefer, neat and clean to fancy and overblown.

We also test our work in a variety of different browsers including multiple versions of Internet Explorer, Netscape (6+), Mozilla, Firefox, Opera and Mac Safari. We are proud of this level of technical involvement.
(One thing we no longer write for specifically is the old Netscape 4.X browsers. They are so different to the bulk of other browsers and in such little use these days that it is rather like making elegant colour TV shows to be shown on a 405 line 1962 vintage TV set. So many compromises would have to be made that it is not satisfying and it is not economic. Netscape 4.X users - it's time to upgrade!)
