 How it works

3520how_img.gif On this page we will give you an overview on how web pages are built and handled by the web designer, and what is so very different about a content management system. Hopefully the explanations will be clear and straightforward - if they aren't, please let us know!

The normal set up

You will know that web sites are made up mostly from a layout language called HTML (Hyper-Text-Markup-Langage) and that people build sites by either writing this stuff using a computer, or by using programs that do most of the work for them.

There are greater and lesser understandings of what HTML should be used and when, and how it all meets accessibilty standards and how to keep it simple for search engines to view and index.

The great majority of web sites available on the internet today are written as static HTML. Static in this sense, means that once built, the page remains unchanged until the next time it is altered by the author.

When such sites have to be updated, someone has to open the file make the amendments directly into the HTML (or by using a program such as Macromedia Dreamweaver) to make the changes, save the file, and then replace the file being accessed from the interent with the newly revised one.

Depending on what has to be changed, it can take longer sometimes to upload the finished files than to make the changes and of course you have to pay for the time spent in carrying out the work.

How this site works

A content managed site like this one is rather different. The site content (the words and stuff on the page) is separated from the site structure (this is the code which holds it all together and presents the data as a web page).

You can probably see that you do not need any technical knowledge to be able to alter the words because they have been separated from the rest of the site. The words are stored in a database and you are given a simple page you can reach using your normal web browser where you can change the words. Directly. No messing. Immediately.

So as soon as you have made a change, the 'live' web page has changed for all your visitors.

Of course there is quite a bit of technical stuff which makes this possible, but you need never be bothered with any of it.

You even have a simple control panel to add new pages, update existing ones, add images, delete images and so on. Take a look at the 'features' page for an overview of what you can do.

The concept underpinning this site is one of simplicity - providing the power to make changes yourself, any time you like.
